Vitamin D Deficiency in India: Symptoms, Normal Levels & Tests
Vitamin D is an essential vitamin that your body uses to build and maintain strong bones. It also plays a key role in keeping your nervous system, immune system and muscles healthy. A vitamin D deficiency means your body does not have enough of it, which can lead to problems with your bones and muscles. Anyone — infants, children and adults — can become deficient, and it is especially common across India.
What Are the Symptoms of Vitamin D Deficiency?
- In children, severe deficiency can cause rickets, with symptoms such as poor growth, bowed bones, muscle weakness, bone pain and joint deformities.
- In adults, symptoms include bone pain, fatigue, muscle weakness or cramps, poor sleep, and mood changes such as anxiety and low mood.
Which Test Should You Get for Vitamin D Deficiency?
If you have been experiencing these symptoms, see a doctor and discuss them. They will usually order a vitamin D test, also known as the 25-hydroxy vitamin D test. It measures the level of vitamin D in your blood and shows whether you have enough for good health, or whether a deficiency may be behind your symptoms.
A second test, called active vitamin D, is sometimes used — though not usually to check whether you have enough vitamin D. Your doctor may order it to monitor kidney problems or to investigate abnormal calcium levels.
A vitamin D test helps your doctor:
- Identify a deficiency (or, rarely, toxicity) and confirm your levels are in a healthy range.
- Assess bone health, since vitamin D is essential for calcium absorption.
- Monitor parathyroid function, which regulates calcium.
- Evaluate malabsorption conditions such as Crohn's disease or coeliac disease.
What Happens During a Vitamin D Test?
A vitamin D test is a simple blood test. A healthcare professional draws a small sample from a vein in your arm, which is sent to the lab. The test takes only a few minutes and does not require fasting.
No special preparation is needed. Just tell the team about any medicines or supplements you take, as some can affect the result — and do not stop any medication unless your doctor advises it.
What Is the Normal Range for Vitamin D?
The vitamin D normal range can vary slightly between laboratories. In general:
| Vitamin D level | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| Less than 30 ng/mL | Deficient |
| 30–50 ng/mL | Sufficient |
| Greater than 100 ng/mL | Possible toxicity |
Keeping vitamin D within the sufficient range is important for bone health and overall wellbeing. If your levels are low, your doctor will usually recommend supplements along with lifestyle changes such as a better diet and some morning sunlight.
